How nutrition and functiponal medicine changed my life

*Confession* I wasn’t always a healthy eater (shhh, don’t tell my kids!). Learning about proper nutrition was a game changer for me – and that’s why I’m so committed to helping others do the same.

Back in high school, I took my first bio chem class and learned that food could either give you energy or take it away. I was a cross-country runner and I wanted to be faster, so I changed my diet and started eating foods to help boost my energy levels.

In college I was a cyclist, but I was having a lot of GI issues from living in the dorms and sorority house. I tried a vegetarian diet for a little while but I became protein deficient, which then introduced hormonal issues.

I had eliminated meat but I was eating terribly – mostly processed carbs and sugar. It was a classic example of doing the right thing the wrong way.

Then I met my husband, who was (is!) a great cook. He taught me how to prepare delicious food from REAL ingredients. It was life changing! I already knew the science, but he taught me the importance of proteins and a balanced plate.

Once I learned how to bring biology and chemistry into the kitchen, I found the balance my body craved and my energy levels skyrocketed. I knew I had to share my knowledge with others struggling to find balance in their lives.

Now, I understand that food plays a huge role in what a person’s overall health looks like. That’s why food can actually be used as a very effective healing practice (a strategy the conventional medical system typically overlooks).

Food choices can help balance hormone levels, increase energy and reduce fatigue, boost mental clarity and focus, and even eliminate acne and hair loss. I work with my patients everyday to develop therapeutic diets, detoxification programs, and mindful eating strategies based on their specific needs and conditions.

When you’re experiencing any type of dysfunction – from GI issues to chronic disease – it’s always worth taking a look at what you feed your body and how your body breaks that food down. Food can be a powerful medicine.

As always, it’s best to consult a doctor before making any major changes to your diet or lifestyle. I recommend working with a Functional Medicine practitioner who can address any hidden issues (Lyme disease, heavy metal poisoning, and adrenal fatigue can often go undetected for prolonged periods, leading to serious chronic conditions if left untreated).
